I agree with almost all of it, except:

Joe Carter?

The guy had a nice World Series moment, but he was never a great hitter, much less a Hall of Fame worthy one. In fact, he may be the most overrated player of the last quarter-century.

Guys like Dale Murphy, though...I'm like you, I always just assumed he was going to be enshrined. Things didn't work out like that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-21084007232458638872007-07-27T05:01:00.000-04:002007-07-27T05:01:00.000-04:00I think the biggest shock on the "once had a shot"...I think the biggest shock on the "once had a shot" list has to be Don Mattingly. In 1989 I would have thought he could retire then and there and be a shoe-in. 6 consecutive all-star appearances, 3 silver-sluggers, 5 of 9 gold gloves he would eventually earn, a batting title, and an MVP.

...and a career Yankee no less. How did he blow that?

...and if anyone wants to start a new thread - is longevity over-rated? Isn't 6 spectacular years more important than spending absolute maximum number of years in MLB so you can rack up hits and HRs simply by having your name in the line-up enough times?rajhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18352095719930348540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-34263156373140212492007-07-27T02:40:00.000-04:002007-07-27T02:40:00.000-04:00Guys I’m On The Fence About:Andres Galarraga, Joe ...Guys I’m On The Fence About:
Andres Galarraga, Joe Carter
Dave Stewart, Bernie Williams
Jack Morris

Morris should already be there. The only reason Williams goes in is because he was a Yankee. He was good but not great. The other three flashed greatness (esp. Stewart), but were not dominate forces in baseball the extended time needed.

Fred McGriff had the best slugging pct. in whichever league he played in for his first 10 years. He was a great hitter. But for some reason no one seems to notice him. He should be going in, but recent voting makes me doubt it. Hope I'm wrong.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-3726825737659653122007-07-26T20:13:00.000-04:002007-07-26T20:13:00.000-04:00You forgot to mention Randy Johnson as another act...You forgot to mention Randy Johnson as another active player who is near the end of their career and will probably make the HOF.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-20328498863863342982007-07-25T23:24:00.000-04:002007-07-25T23:24:00.000-04:00Wow? Take your time (think about it). Roger Clemens has a shot? A shot? I think Barry Bonds has a "Shot" of breaking Hank's record.

"I can think of maybe a handful of active players towards the ends of their careers who have a legitimate Hall of Fame shot:

Mike Piazza, John Smoltz
Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux
Ken Griffey, Jr., Frank Thomas
Craig Biggio, Roger Clemens..."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-41974022972374062652007-07-25T11:16:00.000-04:002007-07-25T11:16:00.000-04:00Great Piece. It is always interesting to look back at the guys you really thought would be in and years later they are still only a visitor to the hall.

I do like baseballs process much better than say the NFL. I think more marginal players get in for football because they have to have several inductees each year.

I am also reminded of the Thurman Munson situation. When he died in the plane crash there were a lot of people that felt he should have been fast forwarded to the Hall. Instead he had to wait just like everyone else and over time that push to get him in died.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
