That's what made it a big draw for me. It was always exciting to find the first shop or convenient store in town with the new season's cards.
I think it was Donruss and Score releasing their cards early around the late eighties / early nineties. Topps always came out later.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-1141690915685461872006-03-06T19:21:00.000-05:002006-03-06T19:21:00.000-05:00I don't know, I still find card condition issues.....I don't know, I still find card condition issues... there's nothing worse than opening a pack and finding that half the cards (or more!) have dinged edges, chipping along the sides (one of the definite drawbacks to the current age is that such minor flaws become more noticeable and thus, I would speculate, more value-damaging), etc. It seems damn near impossible to actually pull a legit perfect 10 card out of a pack. That said, we've certainly come a long way from the days of gum stain.Flaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12901799425963089054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-1141670944911611432006-03-06T13:49:00.000-05:002006-03-06T13:49:00.000-05:00I've got a Nick Esasky baseball from when he did t...I've got a Nick Esasky baseball from when he did the opening of a gas station at the top of my street in Warwick, RI. It certainly beat the signed Xavier Hernandez rookie card I won at a card show. Kind of like Aurelio Rodriguez sending out the batboy for his card photo in the 60's and having it make the card. This is not as creative as that, but fun to see.

This was, of course, the first sign that Darren Daulton was a loop job, which became evident in the recent SI article.

For the record, as much as I used to love getting Phillies cards in the packs being a big fan, getting a Daulton in 1989 was not a good thing. He did not become a star until the early 90's. In 1989, the Phillies were still shoving Lance Parrish down our throats as starting catcher. So Dutch was the backup. You would rather see a Juan Samuel card in your pack at the time instead of a Dutch Daulton. The Revhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04573551553863558468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-1141608172305031172006-03-05T20:22:00.000-05:002006-03-05T20:22:00.000-05:00I used to peek through the back of these packs loo...I used to peek through the back of these packs looking and hoping for Gary Sheffield rated rookie cards. I thought he was going to be the Brewers savior. I met him once outside of County Stadium when he played for the Brewers and I was so excited that when I ran up to him I stepped on his shoes, so he signed for everyone's stuff by mine.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-1141589162504283922006-03-05T15:06:00.000-05:002006-03-05T15:06:00.000-05:00For me the great appeal of Donruss was that, if I ...For me the great appeal of Donruss was that, if I remember correctly, it was the only card brand to feature the player's given birth name on the back. So if a player had an embarrassing middle name it would be displayed in all of its glory. However, I've always been partial to Topps.Evan Kesslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08236061287835022213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-1141579277198931532006-03-05T12:21:00.000-05:002006-03-05T12:21:00.000-05:00Bravo! No all stars, noone from the new york teams, just 10 shit players from 10 shit teams like the Padres or the Rangers, plus a god-damned checklist, which were always a total waste.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20684429.post-1141545404257770232006-03-05T02:56:00.000-05:002006-03-05T02:56:00.000-05:00Thanks; your blog is flawless. He had an obsession with Donruss and actually has every card ever produced by the company up until I think 1998. I can look for the set and grab some photos with the digital camera if you would truly like to see them. He's very organized so it wouldn't be very difficult to find.Chester Carmichaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16866688363116849763noreply@blogger.com
